Pacing Strategy
Flat courses
Even Power
Constant power minimises total work against drag (drag proportional to v cubed). Ronnestad et al. (2020): fastest flat TT strategy. Hold within 3W of target power throughout.
Hilly / Variable
Negative Split
Start at 98%, build steadily to 104%, then empty the tank at 108% in the final 15%. Preserves W prime early and exploits VO2 kinetics in the finish. Abbiss and Laursen (2008).
Short / under 25 min
Fast Start
130% for the first 30–45 seconds to prime VO2 kinetics, settle to 110% briefly, then hold 102% throughout before a final 105–108% push. Reduces VO2 slow component. Effective for TTs under 25 minutes. de Koning et al. (1999), Bishop (2002).
